In just over two weeks, Galway 2020 will submit its second bid book in its quest to become the European Capital of Culture. The deadline for the second bid book is Friday 17 June.
As the campaign enters its closing stages in the coming weeks, Athenry and Merlin Woods are hosting Galway 2020 events.
As part of the Small Towns, Big Ideas Galway 2020 Pilot Projects, Athenry will host an event titled ‘A Taste of Athenry’ where edible sculptures will be unveiled.
Schools, businesses, groups and clubs throughout Athenry have been planting and growing edible plants in recent months. During the Bialover Festival on 16 June, all plants will be delivered to the Town Park, where they will be transformed into a work of art, an edible landscape, by local artists. The ‘edible sculptures’ are inspired by the paintings of Giuseppe Arcimboldo and sculptures by Philip Haas.
Over the weekend 17-19 June, a series of events, from theatre to visual art, will take place throughout the town.
‘Our Place @ Merlin Woods’ is a free two day cultural event celebrating the natural world of Merlin Woods and surrounding community. It will take place on 18 and 19 June from 2pm. The weekend will include music, theatre, family entertainment, art installations, craft and food stalls.
People are encouraged to wander through the woods and you will discover poetry in the trees, stories in the undergrowth, songs from your childhood, local craft, food, music, sculptures created from coppiced wood, fairy walks, and circus skills.
Participating artists include Glasgow based visual artist Maria McCavana, and Galway-based artists: theatre maker Féilim O’hAoláin, sculptor Debbie Reilly, theatre maker/storyteller Catherine Denning, and local musicians and artists curated by An Áit Eile.
