One of the largest outdoor events took place as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations. Farming and Country Life 1916 in Athenry was a wonderful opportunity to experience life as it was in rural Ireland 100 years ago.
The event is took place in the historic Mellows Campus in Teagasc, Athenry, County Galway and included exhibitions, re-enactments, lectures and demonstrations, as well as a range of livestock breeds of the time.
As can be heard in many of these mini-videos, The Foggy Dew was a popular and poignant ballad written reflection on the Easter Rising 1916. It was written by Canon Charles O’Neill who was a parish priest at Kilcoo in County Down in Northern Ireland.
